Richard Upjohn (1802-1878) was an English-born architect who practiced in Boston and New York City. He designed Gothic Revival churches, including Trinity Church in New York City, houses and civil buildings. He was founder and first president (1857-1876) of the American Institute of Architects. The Assembly Chamber of the new New York State Capitol, designed by Leopold Eidlitz, was finished in 1879. Structural problems with the ceiling were discovered shortly thereafter. The problem became critical by 1887 and in early 1888 R.M. Upjohn was made a member of a special commission of engineers and architects to study and resolve the situation.
